For connecting lures to line, I use the clinch knot for mono and fluoro, and the palomar for braid (clinch knot will slip right out of braid). For attaching leaders, I use a uni-knot to uni-knot. These knots are all very simple to tie, and I can't recall ever losing a fish to a broken knot. Frayed line yes, but that's on me.

I can't remember the last time I broke a knot on a fish (minus teeth cutting above it) since I've switched from the clinch to Palomar, but like I said if there is stronger y wouldn't I tie that instead...even if it only makes the difference of one fish.
Larry dahlberg claims he uses the strongest knot that he's tested them all on his machine. Others claim their machine found stronger knots than Palomar. Rebeck knot comes to mind. I just don't understand how there isn't one scientifically proven strongest knot. |

I also use the Polamar knot 90% of the time.
I have vision and dexterity issues with my hands and fingers and the knot is probably the easiest knot to tie. Very simple very strong. I haven't lost a fish due to a failed knot in an extremely long time. The Key to any knot is take your time and LUBE that line!!!! I slobber saliva all over it and that keeps the line from heating up and weakening the knot. THE WETTER THE BETTER!!!!!! Quick tip for some guys, mainly trollers but anyone can benefit from this tip: Pre tie your leaders.....!!!! It's a hell of a lot easier sitting at the table or on the couch tying leaders rather than on the water. Efficiency is key to sucess! By having your rigs pre tied and ready to go if you need to change a hook it takes about ten seconds and your back in the water. If your doing it on the water your pulling out all your stuff and then riggin sometimes in poor conditions as well. (Wind/Rain/Darkness) You might be on a hot bite or a small area and this tip will have you back in action in seconds instead of several minutes!! You can tie several different lengths, hook sizes etc from trout sized to musky size all at your hands. Buy a pool noodle or some type of styrofoam cut it into pieces and wrap several around it and store it in a plastic box or you can just put one in a ziplock bag and make several that way too. May be the difference between catching one or two fish and five or more!!!! DAMN, I GOTTA QUIT GIVING MY SECRETS TO SUCCESS AWAY!!!!!!!!

For me a knot needs to be two things, strong and easy to tie.
I use a palomar about 80 percent of the time. I switch to the clinch knot if it's a large lure where getting the palomar loop around becomes a chore. I also use the clinch when night fishing because I can literally tie it with my eyes closed. Also when it's cold and my fingers aren't functioning well. For leader to braid I use an albright knot and from leader to fly line, a nail knot. |
