knots

you know what bothers me...the fact that there are so many knots...shouldn't there be a 'the strongest' knot for every category and line type? light line tight to hook/lure, heavy line tight to hook/lure, line to line connection, loose line connection (loop), snell etc.

I'll usually use a tight line connection to lures and hooks unless it's a fly or a crank bait without a split ring on the front and i've been using the palomar if the lure or hook is not too big or a double wrap improved clinch knot (idk what it's called, fish n' fool maybe?)

i got these knots from looking at knot wars where they test them with a machine, but then i see larry dahlberg has his own machine and tested a different knot as the strongest...double wrap nail knot or something...i just want the strongest knot!

Re: knots

For leaders I use the polomer knot to a swivel. Then cinch knot from my leader then usually snell on a hook or another cinch to a lure or clip.

Re: knots

I've used the Palomar knot for everything...except line to line of course...and it has never failed me. Mono, Floro, Braid, 4lb mono to 65lb Braid and everything in between. It's just the easiest for me to tie and it's plenty strong enough. I've never used any other knot enough to get really efficient at tying them so that's a factor as well...Me and that clinch knot do not get along at all!!!:D

If I'm using a swivel to connect a leader I even use a Palomar to conect the leader to the swivel first then use a palomar to attach the whole rig to the main line.

I do the same thing with the Palomar knot but if there's stronger, I want it!

Re: knots

The Palomar has one of the highest breaking strengths of all fishing knots when tied correctly. Many do not tie it properly though. Any overlapping when cinching down the knot weakens it's strength considerably. Overlap equates to digging and will eventually wear your connection thin.

And always check them knots!

Re: knots

For connecting lures to line, I use the clinch knot for mono and fluoro, and the palomar for braid (clinch knot will slip right out of braid). For attaching leaders, I use a uni-knot to uni-knot. These knots are all very simple to tie, and I can't recall ever losing a fish to a broken knot. Frayed line yes, but that's on me. :o

Re: knots

I can't remember the last time I broke a knot on a fish (minus teeth cutting above it) since I've switched from the clinch to Palomar, but like I said if there is stronger y wouldn't I tie that instead...even if it only makes the difference of one fish.

Larry dahlberg claims he uses the strongest knot that he's tested them all on his machine. Others claim their machine found stronger knots than Palomar. Rebeck knot comes to mind.

I just don't understand how there isn't one scientifically proven strongest knot.

Re: knots

I also use the Polamar knot 90% of the time.
I have vision and dexterity issues with my hands and fingers and the knot is probably the easiest knot to tie.
Very simple very strong. I haven't lost a fish due to a failed knot in an extremely long time.
The Key to any knot is take your time and LUBE that line!!!!
I slobber saliva all over it and that keeps the line from heating up and weakening the knot.

THE WETTER THE BETTER!!!!!!

Quick tip for some guys, mainly trollers but anyone can benefit from this tip: Pre tie your leaders.....!!!!
It's a hell of a lot easier sitting at the table or on the couch tying leaders rather than on the water.
Efficiency is key to sucess!
By having your rigs pre tied and ready to go if you need to change a hook it takes about ten seconds and your back in the water.
If your doing it on the water your pulling out all your stuff and then riggin sometimes in poor conditions as well. (Wind/Rain/Darkness)
You might be on a hot bite or a small area and this tip will have you back in action in seconds instead of several minutes!!
You can tie several different lengths, hook sizes etc from trout sized to musky size all at your hands.
Buy a pool noodle or some type of styrofoam cut it into pieces and wrap several around it and store it in a plastic box or you can just put one in a ziplock bag and make several that way too.

May be the difference between catching one or two fish and five or more!!!!
DAMN, I GOTTA QUIT GIVING MY SECRETS TO SUCCESS AWAY!!!!!!!!
