Default Monday Mahi and Tog

Well one out of two ain't bad....

Me, Arty, Bill and Will steamed out to the Northwest start of the Mudhole in perfect flat calm conditions... Water was not blue but it was very clear and 76 degrees. 2nd pot we threw bait at we connected with a few small Mahi and thought we were into something... Worked the pots in that area for a while with little success so we steamed a bit further south along the west wall... First pot we stop on I see 2 really nice Mahi... Threw everything but the kitchen sink at them, live peanuts, spearing, bucktails, shads and they wouldn't eat.. Moved around that area working other pots and saw many more same thing, they wouldn't eat either so off to the tog grounds we went.

Got set up inshore and the first drop in 45 feet wasn't so great so we made a small move into 36 feet or so and as soon as we came tight on the anchor we had bites... It eventually worked up into an all out frenzy and Will put on a clinic with the jig. Every time he dropped down he had a bite... Some very nice Sea Bass were mixed in as well. Biggest tog was around 6 pounds or so.

The guys fishing rigs had bites but nothing like the bites we had jigging. Got buzzed by a Coast Guard helicopter and 10 minutes later were boarded by conservation officers wanting to see if we had any illegal fish.

All in all a great day out on the water. A much need trip for me since I hadn't been out in weeks...

Yep 2 different types:

- The survey people at the marina that ask you if you mind them asking you questions and measure your fish, totally voluntary so if you are not inclined you don't have to participate. ..

- The conservation officers who can board and search your boat any time without your consent.

By the way, we were found in compliance when we got boarded Monday. We had no fish on board. When they left we laughed about how disappointed they must have been wasting time on a bunch of hacks who can't catch fish

The research guy was okay and he said that he could add any comments to the report that would go to the state. One of my main comments was how bad these restrictions are for us recreational fishermen, so I said to be sure that he thanks them for reducing the value and desire of boating/fishing so that I will have an even tougher time trying to sell it!!!!!!!

Sounds like tax money well spent. Even if they caught you with like 100 illegal blackfish the fine would not be close to the cost of fuel for the helicopter and boat.

SPEARFISH...

How do you know what the coast guard was out there for? What if that was a training exercise to find a boat and survey around it? Only they really know why they were out there. Coast Guard are here to help and save us. I say its money well spent for sure!

Now if that was a fish and game helicopter out there, that would be a waste of money for sure.

Pete
