Default Tenacious Canyon Report-White Marlin. Wahoo, Mahi-9/9-10

Captains Rich Oris and Bernie Roth hosted Daniel Kokoszka from Lawrenceville, NJ and his friends for an overnighter on Friday and Saturday. Hearing that the Hudson yellowfin bite had diminished we ran to Toms Canyon and trolled the 600 lines east and west with no bites. We trolled the deep area and around pilot whales and began hooking up with white marlin. The first three put on a good show but pulled the hook before we could get a release. The fourth white stayed tight and we were able to get some good pictures before the release. Shortly after three rods went down and we thought we had hooked three more whites. When the first fish came close to the boat we knew we had three Wahoo on the lines. After landing the first one, one of the lines went slack biting off the leader. The third one stayed tight and we were able to sink the gaff. This was our first time with three wahoo on at once and we were very lucky to land two thanks to the charters handling of the rods. About an hour before sundown we began chunking and drifting near the pilot whales but had no bites. We decided to anchor and chunk at night but had no love except for 15 mahi in building seas. At sun up we trolled in sloppy seas for a short time and had a run off that resulted in bending and pulling the stainless hook on a joe shute ballyhoo. We did not see the fish but believe it was another white because of the angle of the line during the fight. Shortly after we headed for home early in a sloppy southwest sea.

Nice catch Bernie. Too bad tuna bite slowed up.
