The creek in Keansburg where this happened has a flood gate right at the mouth of it which opens to Raritan Bay. It opens and closes to keep water in or out of the marinas. Wondering if they closed it and all those fish got trapped back there?

Happens almost every year as Gerry said they close the sea gate at real high tides like the moon tide to keep the water out of the streets of Keansburg that they say is at or below sea level and the amount of fish suck all the oxygen out and they die I have see them 2' thick in the creek before the gate opens and it stinks it's nothing new or to worry about

I kept my boat in Keansburg for several years.. The creek is always chocked with peanuts in the summer.. I think in 2010 or 11 after a long hot spell there was a similar big die-off.. All the slips and fairways where clogged with them... not pretty.. even the gulls where gagging...
