![]() hey guys.
never done a light <20 - 40> spinner for trout and bass<have 2> with braid. seen a lot of places say to use backing. i know for saltwater this saves us on cost, and so the line doesn't "pack" into it self too bad if some one doesn't reel in with pressure. for freshwater, is a mono backing needed. spools only take 110 yards of 4, and 150 of 10<roughly, i forget the 40s exact> not using any crazy braids, just looking to try spider wire for hook sets any thoughts or experience is much appreciated. |

![]() 23, regardless of how much line a reel holds or how much you want to put on I use mono as a base to stop the possibility of braid from slipping on the spool. The mono is short, 10-20', for less quantity reels. The larger ones will get more mono first.

![]() I run about 20-30 feet of mono then use an albright knot to my main line braid to spool my reels

![]() If you are worried about line capacity using mono backing you can use a couple of turns of electrical tape on spool before tying on braid

![]() The mono is really to prevent slippage of the braid around the spool.
I just use enough mono to cover the spool...maybe a bit more. I have tried without mono...and had an issue with slippage...and that was on a spinning reel. Seems like conventional reel would be even worse considering the direct "shear" type force on the spool. |

![]() Just thought of this...when I respool I use moderate tension, then take rod to an open field and fly a kite with it. That puts a nice bend in the rod and packs the line quite tightly. You could do that with backing, then splice in your top-shot and fly again to pack it. I have an 8' shark kite for 80 &50# & regular kite for 30#.

![]() Yea, the 50 gets a pretty good bend, the 80, not so much unless it's a "good" breeze....
