Default There's gold in the Valley!

Fishing RV for my first time yesterday with my brother and a buddy we used to work with(we all used to work at Simon Peter together). We were bundled up as it called for 25* temps to start and no higher than 40* by noon. At the dock by 8 there was only 2 other vehicles in the parking lot but it was half filled when we left at 2pm. I'm super glad I wore my insulated duck hunting waders too with the ramp being so low as the lake is down like 26'. Being in the water to load and unload the boat on the trailer was a necessity.

We were pulling 4 boards with a spread of a flatline, 2-color, 3-color and 4-color leadcore plus 2 downriggers set at varying depths tracking the bottom. The bite was slow and didn't get a fish until about 10 when we got our first 18" rainbow on 3 colors with a J9. We didn't get another fish until about 1pm when we picked up a 19" rainbow on 2 colors with a J7. During the day we had snagged 2 long messes of braid and a 12' branch covered in braid and fishing lines plus I had to cut my cable and lost a 10lb ball in 125' of water getting hooked on what I would guess was another tree... This was a learning curve for me as the bottom is a mess here compared to trolling MC all last year. It was my first time out with my new electric downriggers as well and they performed awesome compared to having to hand crank all the time. It just sucked losing the whole rig and about 215' of cable on one of them but it was better than sinking my boat and I'm glad I had my wire cutters on me at all times.

I also made a big mental mistake with the black's releases throughout the day as I forgot the correct way to twist the line on and had snapped off 2 or 3 leaders with little warrior spoons on hookups or snags. When we called it a day to head in the last line to bring in was my one remaining downrigger rod. I tried clearing the release 65' down and it wouldn't pull so I had to bring the weight up and do it by hand. I hadn't realized what the problem was until after I was driving home with the releases lol. When I got the weight up I handed the rod to my brother to reel in and I unwrapped the line off the release. I hear him saying I got something on the line as he reeled it in behind me and then he starts yelling "It's a golden it's a golden"! I turn around as he nets a beautiful tagged 21" trout that was on the downrigger rod the whole time! The tag didn't come up as any prize but just stated it was a trophy stocking fish and was #11116. The release was pulled but the line was wrapped tight on it so it never popped the rod lol. It was a great end to the trip and I'm glad we decided to battle the cold weather!

Nice job on the fish... The "trees" have taken quite a few balls and cables...

There was a pair of those big banana trout cruising RVR’s eastern shoreline last year. Couldn’t get them to hit. Saw them @ the surface, a few different days. Figured that due to their high visibility, they got picked off by an osprey or eagle.

Great day, especially considering that you are a newbie there. It's a tough place for RV novices. It's kicked my butt over the years.

Losing gear is part of the game... $100 later I'll be back in the game with some spare parts this time around...
