Default bahamas

last week I did a spearfishing trip to Grand Bahama (West End and Freeport.), we also did plenty of rod and reel. It was actually quite cold down there (high of 69 during day, 55 at night), and the wind was cranking. but other than the conditions, the trip was epic. I can't say enough about the life swimming around down there. we had big groupers, snappers, hogs, wahoo on the rods and pole spears, African pompanos, muttons, cero, too much to list. other than a few local fishermen and some large sportfishers out there wahoo'ing, we hardly saw another boat in 7 days. not to mention lobsters galore and a bunch of stone crabs hand plucked off the flats. the next time you are planning a south florida long weekend, give Freeport or West End a whirl instead. flights are easy from Newark. even for the dry tortugas guys.. I know that can be special but there is nothing better than the Bahamas for size and quantity of fish. we only 1 fish lost to sharks in 7 days .. compare that to the 'tugas..

Welcome to a well kept secret ! Where did you stay Old Bahama Bay or Blue Marlin Cove ? It's just 56 miles from West Palm, after Jersey canyon trips I can do that standing on my head ! West End is the starting point for all kinds of neat trips around those tiny Islands.

Love the Bahamas too... It is however like someone turns on the fan around November and doesn't turn it off till May.

Used to go to the Abacos every year and rent a home on Elbow Cay with a boat and a golf cart. It's heaven.... Very laid back and very friendly people. I need get back out there so thanks for the reminder.

One of our very first sponsors on the NJFishing show Captain Dave Dawson still has a place in Freeport I believe. Maybe he will see this and chime in...

Hey Gerry,It is hard to believe the NJ Fishing Show was 15 years ago.I am so glad that I had the opportunity to work with you and John on the show.I lived in the Bahamas for 4 years and found super consistent catching, not fishing there.Deep dropping, high speed wahoo fishing, and Marlin trolling.Once we adjusted our tactics for the area catching was on.I still own a complex in West End GBI with 100 foot dock on a canal .The property goes from the canal to the ocean with 2 houses .My sons and I had the opportunity to use the houses as a base and fish all over the Bahamas. We would spend weeks at Spanish Cay,San Salvador,Chub,Abacos,Cat,and the famous Rum Cay.Marlin and Wahoo pile up on a point a few miles from the marina at Rum.Awesome quality time with my sons and a lifetime of crazy stories to share. My houses are right next to Blue Marlin Cove.I now rent my houses mostly to Florida boaters who can get there in 2 hours flat from West Palm.I will try to post some pics.
