Default Squid Fishing

I have a buddy who is on the North Shore of Long Island and they have a huge but quite secret night squid run this time of year.

I have fished the Jersey Shore all my life and have never heard of such a thing.

Is there a similar fishery around here?

Sandy Hook to LBI

Its more of a New England/Canada fishery from what I gather... We have plenty of them in the NY Bight, but not sure if we have the numbers for a viable recreational fishery such as they have in new England, and up in Washington State on the west coast. Most of us have snagged a few here and there, and I seem to recall party boat guys getting quite a few last year, or the year before.
I suppose there are some guys with boats that know when and where to get them on squid jigs in this area, but keep it quiet.. Actually, I was surprised there are fishable numbers in the Sound.. Does your friend get them from docks/breakwalls, or does he need a boat?... bob

right from the shore….craziest thing

they get out there w flood lights and fill up buckets w them. He has been in that area and marina for years and this is the first he heard of it. Said it was rt under his nose and he never knew it. I guess people don't really talk about it.

Ive never heard it until now

Never heard of them on the North shore, but we used to get buckets full of them at Montauk and Block Island at night along the docks, never knew what they came in for but it was always a great time
