Default On a hunt for stripes

Still here and still kicking.

For the last month and half been going strictly after stripers of both sweet and salt water.

All the way from Sea Bright to Staten Island looking for that big one from shore but so far come up empty. I know its salt water material I just combining it. Only got two so far, one from Sandy Hook and another one from Staten Island. Still upset for something bigger that I lost from Staten Island but live and learn.

Skates, dogfish, star gazers and ling are my usual surf trophies but I will get my 20 pounder + mark my words.

Hybrids on the other thing are still biting strong. Limiting myself to Spruce and to one hole that I have discovered which produces fish every single time I am out there. Bite slowed down at night in the last month but still producing regardless all shape and sizes.

One interesting fact that I have observed. I did not catch a single white catfish from their usual hiding spot this year. Not a single one, while last year they were in abundance. Come to think of it I did not catch a single white from Spruce all year long. Thoughts?

Andre

Thanks Andy.

Actually check on both.

At least I have all winter to work on my new purchase.

That's where all my money will go to.

the hook was disgusting with schoolies and a few keepers mixed in, but i'd imagine from the shore you have to wait and wait till they come in range. we saw plenty of times birds right up to the beach this past thursday and sunday.

dude, get a kayak! it's cheap (you can get a stable decent fishing kayak from 'crescent kayaks' online, you can call the guy) like $300 bucks...you probably spend that in tackle and bait for a few months. I have a double crescent kayak (double was $500) you can put that in the ocean and anywhere. it's just a little heavy and slow, but super stable.

Sounds like you are finding plenty of action in freshwater!
I finally caught my first striper this year in the Keyport area not too long ago on a clam. Definitely don't ignore bunker chunks of clams even if lures work well in the fall. I wasn't into using those baits until that one striper, turned out to be a keeper as well. Now, I think I'll use bait in spring and fall for striped bass

I did get a few white catfish in spruce this year (caught my very first one there too!). They were a mix of sizes from very young to a decent 1 pound one. They are still in there, and as far as I can tell Spruce is still catfish paradise!

Good luck out there!

Chris,

I was thinking about yak but my buddy was pretty much giving away his boat for nothing (granted it was last in a water 2 years ago but I need some work over winter) Cost me $500 with trailer for 94 Larson 194SEI. It does need work but hey what are nights for.

Mud,

Last year I was getting whites in 8lbs range on constant basis in fall.

This year nothing. Unless they knew I be coming for them and decided to hide in a new hole they discovered.

And I am clamming the hell out of stripes besides other ways but no surf keepers yes.
