Thumbs up Reel Class Sunday 5/24 -- Bass to 38#

Had Matt Galvin and crew on today for a 4-man charter.

Left the dock at 6 and got outside by 6:15. Found bunker right away just outside and was able to snag a few and get them in the well. Found more concentrated more to the south, so we went and got more. Due to the boat traffic we elected to wait to fish them.

Further down the line we found even more pods, so here we snag/dropped and fished them live -- all we had was big bluefish chopping up our bunkers. Moved around, found some nervous pods - more bluefish. In tight we saw fish blowing up - so we raced in, only to find more bluefish harassing the bunkers. We caught them on jigs, plugs, heads, and live baits. Couldn't find a bass!

Eventually we moved off to troll the same area we did last week. Very slow, very few marks, but mid morning we finally hooked up with a nice fish; Tommy was on the rod and did a masterful job of fighting a beautiful 47"/38# fish that took a maja #4 chartreuse spoon. However, that was it.

The rest of the way we went back inside where boat traffic subsided to hope to find more fish - but all we found again was big bluefish in tight under birds working rainfish and a few bunker. It was a blast catching them on plugs - but no bass were to be found.

Finished up trolling out at the same area we worked earlier but it was NG - S wind came up real hard at 11:15 and everything seemed to shut off. Finished the day @ 1:30 with the 1 bass in the box and Matt decided to keep three of the blues for his smoker. Tough day, but it was fun with a great crew who will be back in August for a mahi trip
