Default NJ Ice regs question

I was just reading the NJ Summary of Fishing Regs. Under Ice Fishing it states:

Ice Fishing
No more than five devices may be used for taking
fish when ice is present. The devices that may be
used are:
1. Ice supported tip-ups or lines with one single
pointed hook attached, or one burr of three
hooks that measure not more than ½-inch from
point to shaft;
2. An artificial jigging lure with not more than one
burr of three hooks that measure not more than
½-inch from point to point;
3. An artificial jigging lure with not more than
three single hooks measuring not more than
½-inch from point to shaft;
4. An artificial jigging lure with a combination of
the hook limitations described in 2 and 3 above.
Natural bait may be used on the hooks of the artificial
jigging lures. All devices that are not hand-held
must bear the name and address of the user and
cannot be left unattended.
See separate regulations for trout-stocked waters
and Greenwood Lake.

Item #2 reads like a typical blade bait would be illegal because it has 2 trebles. Do I need to pull one of the trebles off and maybe replace it with a single hook?

Based on the way it is written it sounds like the limitiaion is three hooks on an artificial jigging lure.

2. one treble
or
3. up to three singles
or
I think #4 means you could combine 2 and 3 up to a max of three. Instead of having three single or one treble you could have a "burr" with two and and one single. It wouldn't make sense to have number two and three stated and then have number 4 say you could then combine both....that would mean you could have one treble and three singles on one artificial jigging lure but not allowed to have two trebles or six singles.

Another take is that it is so unclear you can basically do what you want. The old ask for forgiveness rather than permission theory!

it's def 5 total, i know that. so if you're jigging you can only have 4 tip ups.

as far as the hooks on the lure...yes double treble hooked lures are illegal through the ice...never heard of anyone getting busted for that though.

pop one of the trebles off if you want to be safe i guess.

I'm unclear about the combination of treble and single though, the way it's stated means you can have a combination of one treble and three singles but only one burr of three hooks (treble). yet a double hook is not mentioned...why can't they just say "you may use no more than X amount of hook points"

I thought the same thing when i saw this rule at the begining of the season...is this a new rule or have i just never paid attention to it before???

anyway you pike and musky guys better watch out! 1/2 inch from point to shaft may make those bigger hooks illegal! you better measure! no snagging!!

Here's what it says in the Summary of General
Fishing Regulations about snagging. Read the last line.

It Is Unlawful To:
• Fish within 100 feet (or as posted) of any fish
ladder entrance or exit from March 1 through
June 30.
• Spear fish in fresh waters. See exception for
Delaware River, page 28.
• Possess a fishing device with more than nine
hooks in total, or more than three treble hooks,
except for the Delaware River; see page 28.
• Use set lines.
• Use cast nets in freshwater lakes or trout stocked
waters. See Baitfish Regulations, page 31 for
other exclusions.
• Foul hook or snag any species of fish. This does
not apply to fish taken through the ice.

i was partially joking and just referring to the 1/2 inch size limit on hooks (point to shaft). what i meant was, why would they have the 1/2 inch point to shaft size limit on hooks other than to limit the chance of jigging up and snagging a fish??

how can anyone prevent snagging a fish anyway? oops it swiped at my lure and i hit it in the belly...idk why they bother making that rule.

it also says it's unlawful to use set lines...but then doesn't say 'except on ice'...what's a tip up? a set line.

a lawyer would destroy most of these rules haha
