Default Wind Guru was boss

Thank You NJFishing for giving us Wind Guru. During Juno they predicted the winds correct while everyone else had it wrong. They had the wind direction and strength right along with snow totals for Sandy Hook. I use them all year and they have been far more accurate than NOAA. Thanks Captain George

Windguru is based on the GFS model.

GFS stands for the Global Forecast System. It is run by National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) which is a unit of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), NWS (National Weather Service), USA. The GFS is run four times per day (00 UTC, 06 UTC, 12 UTC, and 18 UTC) out to 384 hours. GFS is a global model so it cover all the Earth! Since January 2015 GFS produce forecasts with resolution of 27 km out to 240 hours.

windguru news 14.1.2015

NOAA/NCEP made a major GFS model upgrade. GFS forecasts now cover all globe with 27 km horizontal resolution. We also extended the forecast horizont to 10 days.

This is a big upgrade that affect not only windguru, but all the sites that rely on GFS (most of weather sites on the internet ;-), if you were used to make decisions based on GFS you should reconsider the way how you interpret the forecasts for your spot now, it may take a while to get used to the new forecasts.

Maybe NOAA should use its own GFS model.

For snow, do you multiply the precip mm by ten to get accumulation?

Agreed!

However overall I think I will go back to sticking my head out the window...

look at the trees (or the flags) - if they are bending I am staying at the dock!

A lot more accurate these days!

If I stick my head out the window and it gets wet I grab my rain gear
