Default Tog in the fog 11. Rhode Island style

Several years ago I was fortunate enough to be on the Mimi when Capt Ken took us to his secret spot. He only did this because it was so foggy that no one could see him and steal his numbers. It was an epic day of catching big fish. Andrew caught 3 tog over 10 # while I caught one. There were many many other big fish put on the Mimi that day and I was pretty sure that it was a once in a lifetime event.
Andrew and I head north to Point Judith yesterday at 1 am to meet Bill Ytuna at a non sponsor charter boat. Bill had fished with the Capt on Tuesday and he had a spectacular day with many big fish up to 9 #. As we headed out in the fog we were all hoping for a repeat. We got set up and started in with a steady bite. It was nothing insane but there was a fish coming up every couple of minutes. We started out with some very nice fish between 6 and 10 #s. Bill was in the lead for our 3 man pool with a nice 7.5# fish. I got a got a bite and set the hook on the real deal. After some drag pulling and line stretching the mate Mike put the net under a beautiful 11.5 # fish. After weighing the fish the Capt and mate looked at me like I was crazy when I released the fish. From there on it was game on! Andrew broke out the white leggers and started to put on a clinic. He put around 10 fish in a row on board between 6-9#. They were eating the whole crabs with a vengance. Big fish were coming up all around the boat. I was fortunate enough to put 2 more 10+ # fish in the net to be released again. Unfortunately a lobster boat picked up our anchor line while hauling in his pots. This got us moved off our spot and it was never quite the same. We were still catching great fish but just not as quickly and as many as before. We headed in a 1am with our 3 man total of 43 keepers, only keeping our limit. The boat had caught only about 10 short tog with the vast majority of fish monsters. I would estimate that the boat had 40 fish over 6#. This was the best big fish day that I have ever seen and one that I will remember for ever. I think that from now on I am going to be blackfishing on foggy days when possible.

I've been fishing that area since I was a tot it always has been the same. It's probably the only area that has not changed & with the regulations the way they are set today they will probably never change. When there were no regulations a charter would get a 100 fish day. It's better then anywhere I have ever fished for blackfish by a long shot.

Great Trip Eric..
Those are the days we all hope for. Someday I will get to RI and fish for Tog!
I have only come close once to that type of fishing a few years back. Drop and reel tog from 6 to 9 lbs !
Hope to get out next week !
