Kayak Fishing

I have read where folks fish in the bay on a kayak. Do they have to be registered like a boat is? If so, how and where do you do this. Also, if you buy a kayak, what else do you need? I can assume the paddles come with it? Where do you get the roof rack and how does it get installed? I really don't know what other questions to ask, so if someone is experienced and knows what else you need, I 'd truly appreciate it. As you can see I have absolutely no idea.

Go to NJ Paddler in Brick, NJ. You can demo a kayak there and purchase anything you need.

kayaks do not have to be registered and do not come with paddles or usually anything else, most will come with a seat, thats about it, for the roof rack try googeling roof racks with your zip code and you should see results, also most companies make kayaks rigged for fishing with rod holders, depth finders, etc., it just depends on how much you want to spend and what kind of fishing you want to do,

i have an ocean kayak XT angler one of the cheapest options out there, it came with 2 rod holders and a seat, i mounted a 3rd rod holder and a milk crate for storage and have a rope tied around the cockpit that i use for hooking an anchor, liveline, my paddle when im anchored, minnow bucket and whatever else i need onto, kayak fishing can be very productive once you get the hang of it, feel free to ask any other questions

Kayaks usually come a la cart. Buy the kayak and then add the sides.
No reg in NJ for kayak. Woth motor not sure on that.
Buy the best you can cause the basic will get old quick.

I Kayak fish very regularly out of NJ saltwater bays and fresh water rivers and lakes in North Jersey. There are 2 main types of kayaks you can purchase. Sit on tops and Sit inside. They are exactly how they sound, if your going to fish saltwater I would strongly recommend getting a kayak which you can sit on top (less chance of swamping and sinking if you take on a wave) Also you can get a paddle kayak or a peddle kayak. This depends on your personal preference and budget since peddle kayaks are much more expensive. Non motorized vessels under 12ft do not need to be registered, but you must carry a USCG certified life vest (I always wear mine, its useless if its stowed away) and a sound signaling device.

I own a 13ft Hobie Revolution which is a sit on top peddle kayak similar to the one posted above by Howard. Hobie kayaks are great to keep your hands free and enjoy fishing, photography, or even a beverage or snack.
