Default Sharking out of SRI

Leaving Shark River around 4a on Friday, never caught a mako. I was planning on heading to the Chicken but wondering if anyone has a closer suggestion. Friend of mine swears by the Fingers but didnt get a bite over the weekend in the tournaments. He tried convincing me I am going too far. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

I think your friend is right... The Mudole is close in an a great place for sharking.

If I were you I would make the run out there, stop the boat and figure out which direction you are going to drift in... Once you know that you will want to set up on the east or west wall so your drift starts in the shallows and drifts into the deep and over or close to some of the wrecks or that are all over the place out there... They should show on your chart plotter.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thank Gerry, I will be sure to post my results. That's a lot less fuel! By the way that navionics Web app is great in the office! I stare at that thing all day long..

Mud Hole is a good place to start, many options for structure. There were over 300 boats fishing the tournaments alone this past weekend, I know of plenty of sharks caught in the Mud hole. The glory hole is also another popular spot and that is before the Chicken Canyon. Good luck!

What these guys said: its always a crap shoot as the where: all the spots mentioned can produce:
Long drifts over as much structure as possible is what you want along with clean water, right water temp, some bluefish or other life, the right wind and time.
Be prepared to wait for the slick to work if you have the right conditions as sometimes you land right on the life but most times it takes 3 plus hours for them to find you.

We had shark life near the Glory during the tournaments just not the size. Mud hole great place to start if you don't want to make the long run.

Good luck

Im no sharking fan but seversl years back when the Tuna made an appearance the Glory was the spot for trolling. Saw good shark sign during the jaunts out there on my boat , 47 mi I believe out of SRI where I kept my boat as well
Running south use to be good as well but more competetion down there like the MH !

I agree with Gerry also. The mudhole is a good place to start. If you can find the bluefish out there, or anywhere, grab some nice fish bait. Like others have said, find structure and do your best to drift over it. As you are running out there, if it somewhat light out, keep an eye out because there have been threshers eating the bunker closer inshore. I have caught sharks in the mudhole area. I have done this both ways, don't be afraid to pick up after a few hours a move slowly back up your slick, outside of it of course. I have caught sharks that where coming up the slick. You can try this, when going back up the slick, leave a bait out with some weight on it to keep a down a little. You might be able to attract a bite. I haven't caught one this way but have seen it work. Catch'em up.....

All great info, thanks everyone for sharing. I am good with trying the MH, hopefully my crew is in agreement. Might shoot for Monster's Ledge.
