Default Pequest and South Branch 1/13

Hit the streams yesterday for some and trout and was not disappointed.First up was the south branch which yielded 1 bow and huge sucker, while bushwacking thru the woods I came upon a fox that was caught in trap and going nuts.It was pretty sad to see this as the fox was in a lot of pain.Next stop was the pequest behind the hatchery which I knew would be a sure thing.Managed to pull around 20+rainbows out of there from 5"-16",it seems that the hatchery unloaded some surplus fish in there cause some spots had a dozen or so little guys schooled up.Fish in the south branch were deep and on the pequest they hugged the shoreline.

Nice job there...I was thinking about going this morning but got lazy....tomorrow I'll be on 'em for sure, a little more comfortable out....Too bad you couldn't help that fox out somehow....I hate when I see stuff like that when I am out there(and i have).....did you let F & G know about this...maybe there was something they could have done....

Sounds like a good day out on the water man. Good stuff.

Sh*tty for that red fox though. Avg value of a red fox pelt in 2013-2013 was almost $36. Food for thought...

.

Sounds like a great day on the water.

That fox pic is disturbing. I guess I can't condemn trapping because we are all outdoorsmen harvesting this wild bounty. There are just some things I don't like to see.

If I am interpretting the Fish & Game laws correctly, leg-hold traps are outlawed in NJ. They can only use snares (which is like a wire noose), box traps like Havahart traps, and body-crushing traps like conibear traps.

Fox was caught on the leg,it was jumping around like crazy. You can see the chain that led to the trap on the tree.

Nice catch buddy! Have you seen BUBBA? Loads of fish in that Pequest! Bummer about the fox. They are cool looking animals. See them all the time in Long hill township and throughout the great swamp, silver and red!

Long story short. Contacted F&G after speaking to Shucker, thought it may have been a leg clamp. I used to trap a long time ago and I was pretty sure they were illegal. No less than 2 hours there was a CO back there looking for the fox. Like I said, been out of trapping for many years now and I was unaware of the use of snares. Kudos to the CO's that ran with this at lightning speed only to find the fox and trap gone.

I think I am going to go to the pequest soon as I need a fix of flyfishing!

I am a hunter, but trapping really gets my blood boiling. This is so inhumane it's not even funny. They trap these animals and let them suffer till they come to the traps, then shot them in the head.

If you want to take these animals at least give them the respect they deserve and hunt them and kill them quickly.

Agreed!!! Don't let em suffer. That's the worse thing in the world for any living breathing anim or human to go through!!!!
