Default 9- 25 Canyon Tuna Report - Big Jamaica

9-25 Canyon Report

The weather for the Tuesday/Wednesday Canyon trip was a little choppier than predicted but it did not stop the Mahi-Mahi from biting. We spent most of the day fishing for mahi and landed over 200 fish.

As the sun was setting we anchored for the night to fish for tuna and swordfish. Our first bites came around midnight when yellowfin passed through.
Nuno DeCosta landed the first yellowfin. Another was landed and a couple lost at that time. It was about an hour later when they passed through and we landed two more. After that Dan Hospodar hooked a 180LB Mako. After a tough battle and a couple of leaps, the Mako was landed. It was quiet the rest of the night so we went on the drift just after sunrise.

There were loads of porpoise and a good number of humpback whale feeding in the area with tuna underneath. We made a few more drifts and landed one each drift and lost several more.

The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail the Canyon every Tuesday and Thursday at 7AM for 31hr trips and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night for 22 hour trips leaving 5PM.
There is also space available on other upcoming trips. For information go to www.bigjamaica.com or call 732-528-5014

Our Giant sea Bass schedule is now available. In November the Jamaica will sail for Striped Bass and Blues.

Bluefishing this weekend on the 110’ Jamaica Star sailing Friday & Saturday night at 7:30PM and Saturday & Sunday at 7:30AM.

Not looking to cause trouble, but isn't the mahi limit 60 per boat? Are there other quotas for party boats? Just curious.

Pretty sure there are no bag or size limits for Mahi for private or charter boats under HMS rules. They are the fastest growing and most prolific fish in the ocean.

Lifted this from Wikapedia

"They are a relatively short lived species, with a life span of only four or five years. Mahi-mahi are among the fastest growing fish, with a minimum population doubling time under 15 months"

Kinda like Rabbits

Was looking at a chart , Washington Canyon is way south, my guess is 160miles !! Really not out of reach, 20 knots for 8 hours if the weather is nice!!!
