Default Lake Wawayanda Pickerel Blitz!

With all the awesome posts about monster wipers and eyes, I'd like to share a similar report, albeit featuring MUCH smaller fish.

I hit 'yanda between 5:30 PM and 8:00 last night. I started out looking for deep trout in the 50'-70' area with shiners, no dice. Or even god forbid the elusive land-locked salmon! BTW, if anyone has had luck there with any of the above, please chime in. I have had no problem catching deep water brownies and lakers on other lakes, just not this one for some reason.

So I started working the pads and coves on the West side and then the East side on my way back to the launch. Caught at least 20 fish in an hour! Mostly pickerel, 4 LMB in the 10" range, and a couple of slab crappie, 1-2 lb, just like the ones in Shepherd Lake. It was so ridiculous that I started yanking the lure away if on the first tug it didn't "feel" big. I was actually praying to NOT catch anything that wasn't big because I was chasing daylight and didn't want to spend time unhooking dinks. It was for a moment a fish EVERY cast or every other cast. The not-so-good news is that I had not one, not two, but THREE monster pickerel at the side of the yak and couldn't get them in. Two snapped the line, and one just decided to unhook himself just as the net was in position. The most exciting thing was when the one big pickerel EXPLODED on my jig head worm about 3 inches from the yak. I had all I could do to loosen the drag as fast as possible and keep him out of the weeds. He was the one who just decided to unhook himself. I was bummed out and thrilled, all at the same time! Anyway, here are a couple of pics, just not the ones I was counting on sharing with the forum. Pickerel go easily over 4 lbs in that place and are as exciting a fight at that size as some of the Pike I've caught. Non-stop action. Great place in the evening, and during the week, they don't charge after 4:00 PM. Tight lines. Looks like the bite is on!

Thanks for the post. Sometimes the best action is the explosive action on a piece of structure or near the boat. Landing the fish is great, but seeing that explosion on your lure and perhaps the initial fight, even if ya don't land the fish, is a rush that keeps us all going back for more.
