![]() My sweetwater goto guy is outta town and I want to take my 5 yo grandson this Saturday. Is there anyone with some insight i.e.: best bait or shoreline location that you'd be willing to share. He's not a spot burner ... hell , he can't even spell " spot". Thanks for any help. PM me if you like.

![]() I've heard both good and bad about Spring Lake Kids day opener
(boats on the lake, adults pushing kids outta the way, etc.) It's only one day out of the year, any stream or pond will do. You can always meet us at Duke Island Park and you can push Wilson outta the way ( he'll be bored and tired after soaking worms for 30 min. anyway) |

![]() The Spring Lake opening day is held each year through the donations of anglers and others who want to see kids have good, clean fun. Every year, youngsters catch trophy-sized trout and are treated to a good time by the volunteers. One of the organizers is an avid surf fisherman who also supplies most of the bait shops in Ocean and Monmouth County with killies. If you want you and your five-year old to have a fun couple of hours together, by all means go. It's safe, there's lots of activitiy and a five year old gets bored pretty quickly so having the ability to move when you have to is important. The state also stocks Mac's Pond in Manasquan just for opening day. It's quite a bit smaller than Spring Lake but it might be worth a shot. Enjoy the day. The weather should be good. It sounds like you're a saltwater guy so you might feel comfortable at one of those locations near the ocean.

![]() if you want to enter your son into the tourney they hold, you should get there super early. guys start filling the shoreline before 5. By 8AM, you're lucky if you can get a spot.
Agreed about the boats and adults. Learned my lesson a couple years ago when I brought my niece down there. 14' aluminum boat with 4 adults dropped anchor 20' right in front of me, leaving my niece literally no where to cast! They have hot dogs and drinks, as well as supply some power bait and meal worms. Good luck if you go! |

![]() As said before, get there by 6 at the latest to find a spot.
The adults pretty much ruin it for most kids as I believe some must sleep overnight. With that being said, my kids always manage to have a good time and catch a couple of trout. Powerbait, worms, mealies, all work, live minnows/fatheads are the true ticket.
