Default Tried a new lake: Splitrock Reservoir 7/23

After getting a bit bored with my usual spots, I decided to head up to Splitrock Reservoir after reading the article in this months "The Fisherman" magazine.

My first impressions were beautiful place, horrible excuse for a "launch" . Got to the lake at about 6pm and fished shore structure with the new wacky jack worms that the guys at Meltzers are going crazy about. Had no luck with them besides a few hits.

At about 8pm, I switched over to the floating jointed rapala and immediately caught 1 pretty smallmouth (about 12") and a few over zealous sunnies. Left the lake after dark at about 930pm.

Anyone have any tips for this place? I will be heading back sometime this week after work with the 'yak or in a friends canoe with the trolling motor. Sorry, no pics. I don't consider anything under 12" picture worthy!

Anyone have any tips for this place?

1.) Fish at night. 2.) Use saltwater size lures

How was the lot and surrounding areas ? I make it a point to pack a trash bag and police the area cleaning up as much as I can before I leave.

Andy thanks for the PM.

From what a few of the guys coming in as I was going out said, the back area seems to be a hot spot. I only made my way up to the cove at the "halfway" point before I ran out of daylight. The fish seemed to be a bit off the banks. The baitfish were breaking the surface in 8-12ft. depths, which is where I caught the lone Smallie. Seems like a great spot to toss a spinnerbait, as I was totally surprised by the lack of weeds in the lake.

As packed as the lot was, it and trail down to the "launch" were clean of trash. It truly is refreshing site to say the least, especially considering the amount of trash that floats passed me in the Passaic River

I live in Rockaway. Splitrock is very difficult to fish we have not had tons of luck there but we do okay. I ice fish it more then anything and we have good luck when you find the crappies and perch. The back cove is worth the trip back there.
