The northern pike program was initiated in 1981 with the stocking of Spruce Run Reservoir and Budd Lake. A total of 15 waters have been stocked between 1981 and 1996. A number of these waters were stocked only once as "surplus production releases." Currently nine waters (six lakes and three rivers) are stocked on a regular basis. Waters that are currently stocked with northerns are Spruce Run Reservoir, Budd Lake, Farrington Lake, Deal Lake, Pompton Lake, Cranberry Lake, Pompton River, Millstone River and the Passaic River. Millstone River.The 20-mile south-to-north Millstone River, from Princeton (Mercer County) to Manville (Somerset County) is a vastly under-rated and ignored venue for largemouth bass, northern pike, channel catfish, chain pickerel, rock bass, sunfish, and carp. Smallmouth bass linger in the lower reaches of the Millstone, particularly where it merges with the Raritan at Manville
.
The Division's current northern pike program was initiated in 1981 with the stocking of Spruce Run Reservoir and Budd Lake (Morris County) after hatchery rearing techniques for the "northern" were developed from 1978 to 1980 using tiger muskellunge. A total of 15 waters have been stocked since 1981. A number of these waters were stocked only once as "surplus production releases." Currently 6 lakes and 3 rivers are stocked with northerns on a regular basis. Northern pike fisheries exist in Spruce Run Reservoir, Budd Lake, Farrington Lake (Middlesex County), Deal Lake (Monmouth Couty), Pompton Lake, Cranberry Lake (Sussex County), Pompton River, Millstone River and the Passaic River.
