![]() Told someone last week that I felt the bluefish would show after the full moon this past Monday. Well most of us know by now, they showed up in Manasquan Inlet, Shark River and Raritan Bay yesterday.
Went out looking for them today. First stop was to one of my go to spring bluefish spots. Had incoming water, fished hard for 60 minutes with no signs of life. So off to my second spot. Upon my arrival I saw one guy hooked up and 2 fish on the sand. In addition, as I was getting my gear together there was another hook up. After a few casts, I had a blow up on my plug no more than 8’ feet from but never came tight. Another few casts produced a missed strike. All the time there was an occasional bluefish caught up and down the line. The slow bite died off at slack and I was tempted to move to my next spot. But something told me to try the first hour of the outgoing. Glad I had stayed cause the bite definitely turned on. I ended up putting 8-10 (Lost actual count) bluefish over the wall ranging from @#7-14 while pulling the hooks on the same amount and dropping to trying to swing them up. Most guys were fishing SP or Yo-Zuri minnows and were doing OK. I was doing much better using both a Rapala XRap XR 14 and a Sebile Bull Minnow . What I noticed with both these plugs compared to a SP is that they run a little deeper and they suspend instead of float when you stop your retrieve. Plus the hooks are of much better quality Go get ‘em. Last edited by Skolmann; 04-30-2021 at 12:34 PM.. |

![]() With the exception of last spring (when they really didn’t show up at all), they were here until mid June in the springs of 2015-2019. However, the pattern I noticed was that the real big one (#10+) showed first and after the first week the size would get progressively smaller by 2-3 pounds each week. By the end of May it was was @2-5s until they leave by Father’s Day.
