Default Jig heads for shad?

No ice yet here in Pa. and deer season is winding down fast which means it’s time to expand the tackle boxes in anticipation of the spring run. Wondering what jig heads everyone is using for 6” and larger shads for vertical jigging?

If I know there are slot size fish around, I'll throw on a Hogy Barbarian jig head (anywhere from 1/2 oz to 1 1/2 oz), but they get kind of pricey to lose. If I'm not sure what's around yet, my go-to is just a cheap Kalin's 1 oz. jig head with a 7" shad. I'll troll that around in the kayak till I find them then start casting and jigging.

These are cheap and probably worth a shot... With cheaper jig heads, the only problem I have found over the years is that the hooks are not as razor sharp as they are on "high end" expensive ones.. A few passes with a stone or file fixes that.. I typically use cheap bulk jig heads and catch plenty of fish with them, painted or unpainted... bob

Same here, I've had hooks straighten on the Kalins jig heads before...that's why I bust out the hogy's when I know the big girls are around. These look good too tho for cheaper ones!

Savage eel heads fit shads as well as the larger eel bodies .
They are are about 8 bucks for a pack of 3.
And hold up really well

Used to make my own for years but got out of pouring. I found a guy that uses 8/0 owners on a 2 oz head. Can have them powder coated or plain. Take a beating and don't chip. Perfect for 6" shad bodies. Great quality and the price is more then fair.
