Default Surprise Catch 10 miles out

Went out fishing with a buddy yesterday and wanted to try something besides fluking. Took advantage of the absolutely amazing weather and headed east about 10 miles.

Found some life, through on a piece of squid (fish were eating anything) when my rod starts buzzing. Thought I somehow got snagged on the boat or a buoy....until I realized I was hooked up onto a monster cobia on my 6' carbon fiber fluke rod. 45 minutes later we landed this one. My first ever cobia in NJ. Water was 82-83 degrees and crystal clear. Awesome day!

Bunch of chicken mahi, banded rudderfish, saw a few turtles. Just a ton of life. Wish I had tuna rods with me, I felt like even they were there. It was crystal clear 82-83 degree water was pretty wild and something that certainly doesnt happen often that close in!

What an awesome catch, especially as a surprise! Which carbon fiber rods do you like?

Thanks guys! I am a huge fan of Tackle World rods. Caught the cobia using a Ghost Hunter rod with a daiwa spinning reel and 15lb braid. 45 minutes to bring in this fish. Kept adjusting the drag to do my best to keep the line from snapping. Oh I did have a 30lb flurocarbon leader on, attached to the circle hook I was using to catch mahi. Just an awesome day. Hope there will be more after this storm
