Default Surf/Canal report

I gave it a try in southern Monmouth county at first light this morning. The conditions and weather were nice but there wasn't any bait or signs of life and only one other angler to be seen. I was throwing a littleneck popper and trying some different retrieves and just when I was thinking about switching lures I thought I saw a swirl behind my popper after a couple more cranks I hooked up and landed a small Bass around 25 inches. I kept at it for another hour to no avail but I was happy to land my first surf Bass of the Fall season. I took a ride to the Canal and got schooled by the Blackfish in there. I was swinging and missing like a blindfolded lumberjack and only managed one small Seabass and a Blowfish. I hit the surf again this evening and fished into the night but there was nothing doing

I tried again last night in Ocean County, nothing doing there although there was some bait in the wash. Gave it go back in Monmouth County this morning and had a good schoolie bite landing one on a popper and two on a bucktail among several bumps and short strikes. The better fishing was predawn and I saw others landing some Bass too. Starting to feel like fall and I saw gulls working offshore nonstop about a mile out.

Good job Bruce! Getting out in the fall and fishing the surf or back waters is one of the greatest times of the year even when you don't catch. Beautiful time of year, just a matter of time before the migrations are in full swing. Thanks for the report and your comments to MAFMC!

Great reports man! I always like to read about what folks are catching on different beaches, not just boat reports.
When I see that not all trips produce fish even from skilled anglers, I realize that I'm not the only one who sometimes goes out there and gets skunked.

Keep at it!

Thanks for comeback. Surf fishing is a grind getting skunked makes the catching more rewarding
