Default Bonito, False Albacore & Spanish Mackerel—Oh My

My son Jason and I hopped aboard the a non sponsor party boat today with our eyes set on targeting false albacore, bonito and spanish mackerel. I had two goals; 1-catch all 3 of the aforementioned species & 2-catch at least one fish on each of the 3 setups I brought. Broke the inlet and were met with a brisk southeast wind with seas running 3-5’. Which made for a bumpy 25 mile ride to the southeast to a lump in 85’ of water. Once we set up on the drift it wasn’t bad. We both opted to started with 1 ounce pink jigs (which was the hot color)-I was using a Daddy Mac jig while Jason was using a Joe Baggs jig. Within minutes, Jason was into his first false albacore of the day. As he was fighting his fish, I hooked up and promptly landed a spanish mackerel. A few casts later, I landed my first bonito of the day. It took me a few more minutes but within the first hour of fishing, I had achieved one of my goals as I boated my first false albie of the day. In the same time frame, Jason put a few more albies in the boat. Had a good steady pick of fish the rest of the drift. On the next drift, I went to my second rod rigged with a 1.25 ounce (since we now were on the up wind side of the drift & I wanted to make sure I was getting down to the bottom) Epoxy jig in a spearing pattern. My first drop yielded a nice bonito. Jason was still using his original jig and was hammering the albies as well as adding a spanish mackerel. I caught 2 more bonito before I allowed to young boys who were brothers to fight and land a bonito of their own using my rod as I coached them. On the third drift, Jason and I both switched over to using 5” Tsunami Split Tails (which perfectly matched the color and size of the sand eels the fish were gorging on). I was now using my third set up and had action right way thus achieving my second goal. Finally tally for me was 8 albacore, 3 bonito (not including the 2 that I handed for to Jeremy & Justin) and 1 spanish mackerel. I also pulled the hook on 3 fish. Jason ended his day with an even dozen false albacore and a spanish mackerel-while pulling the hook on a few as well.
