Default Do You Tip??

Not your server or mate but your Gulp with bait when jigging for Fluke...

Seems to be 2 camps here... Those who tip and those who don't and people are pretty opinionated on either side of this argument.

On our boat we're big tippers It seems that at least when we're in the bay tipping makes a big difference. You tip with a spearing you get more hits and once the spearing is gone you might as well be home on the couch.

The other side of the argument I've heard is that it attracts all sorts of undesirables and gulp only produces better quality fish.

What say you??

I like to tip with squid about the same length as the gulp. A lot of my friends tip with spearing and have mixed results, go figure.

Interesting question. For years in the ocean we never used both, it was either gulp or bait on the buck tail or dropper. Bait was usually fluke ribbon from previous trips or salmon belly. Seems like guys fishing the hook area use both and do very well, not sure if it's a bay thing or what. Maybe in the ocean fluke want bigger profile baits. Possibly in the bay the gulp acts as an attractant but a spearing, killie or smaller strip draws the strike. Or maybe the combo would work equally as well in the ocean and we just over looked it.

I think it depends on the fish, do they want white or chartreuse or pink, tipped or not and changing constantly. I personally do not tip, if I use bait (spearing, killies, squid, etc) it goes on a plain hook above the bucktail and I've always done very well.

Gulp is like plastic fruit. It looks good until you bite into it. If you are quick you hook the fish before he can spit it out. With bait and gulp you have a better shot because the fluke will keep eating.

Last few years my main go to for ocean flunking has either been a single jig with 6"grub or nemesis, or teaser combo with jig/bucktail and 6"grup on teaser. On the single jig or teaser I will usually put a strip of squid or other strip bait but nothing else. IF I am using a bucktail, I only use a small gulp minnow as attractant and then would tip with strip and meat. These are not hard and fast rules for me but basically I like to keep things clean and neat. I dont always use strips for my single jig or teaser, but I am ready to adjust either way.

Also to note I am not a fan of the drop and bounce. Usually I prefer to launch my rig as far updrift as I can and work it back to me then let it swing and begin working it conventionally. Adding strips cuts down on my casting distance so if I can do without it, I will avoid the strip. Something about that time when the jig begins to turn and head the other way that seems to trigger strikes. That being said tomorrow will be my first trip of the year so well have to see how it goes!!!

depends on what gulp you use, if you throw a big 5 or 6" swimming mullet on a 1.5oz jig head, maybe a small thin strip of squid, however it produces without any enhancement. I see a lot of guys load the hook up with everything and catch more skates/doggies then fluke, its all about natural presentation and being able to use the least amount of weight possible to get bottom. if the current is ripping loading your jig up with bait and gulp isnt going to help with sink rate/staying in the zone. IMO less is more for most of the situations i encounter.
