For-Hire eVTR Training Workshops

I posted this to a few boards I've participated on and a colleague suggested I post here also...

The Mid-Atlantic Council will be holding two workshops (http://www.mafmc.org/newsfeed/2018/f...ning-workshops) in February to help for-hire vessel operators prepare for upcoming electronic reporting requirements (http://www.mafmc.org/for-hire-evtr/). Beginning March 12, 2018, all vessels with Federal charter or party permits for species managed by the Mid-Atlantic Council will be required to submit electronic vessel trip reports (eVTRs) while on trips carrying passengers for hire. The workshops will primarily focus on training for the SAFIS eTrips/mobile and eTrips Online systems. Participants will receive hands-on assistance with navigating the eTrips application, setting up favorites, and creating and editing trip reports. • Saturday, February 10, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. DoubleTree by Hilton Boston North Shore, 50 Ferncroft Rd., Danvers, MA, 978-777-2500
• Saturday, February 24, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Clarion Hotel & Convention Center, 815 Route 37 West, Toms River, NJ, 732-341-6101
Instruction for SAFIS eTrips/mobile (for use on tablets) will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 12:30 p.m. Instruction for eTrips Online (for use on desktop or laptop computers) will begin at 1:00 and conclude by 4:30.

Thanks for posting this Jason.... While some people might be able to attend these workshops in person, I think some might prefer a webinar...

The beauty with a webinar is no one has to leave their homes or take off of work and you can record the entire session and make it available to others who can't make the webinar so they could see it at their leisure.

www.gotomeeting.com would be a great solution for this and many other meetings the MAFMC holds...

All full Council meetings are live webcast with recordings posted (we use Adobe Connect), and we use webinars for a variety of other meetings as well.

Jason,

What was the impetus for the change in reporting regulations and how is the information planned on being used. Will it replace MRIP data collection efforts, supplement it, or have no bearing whatsoever. I believe any data providing more accurate information is a step in the right direction if the system capturing the data is reliable, interpreted objectively and used constructively.

Just saw your question - sorry so long to respond...

The goals were to:
1) increase the timeliness (availability) of data submitted through VTRs;
2) reduce the reporting burden on data providers (for-hire operators and/or captains) by eliminating the need of paper-based reporting, and;
3) increase the accuracy and quality of data by reducing recall bias associated with delayed completion and submission of paper forms.

VTR info is already used in a variety of ways - we just updated a document that describes some of the ways the Council and MRIP currently use it: (http://www.mafmc.org/s/VTR-For-Hire-Fact-Sheet.pdf). As noted in that, the effort data from VTRs is actually currently used for official MRIP estimates, and MRIP is also investigating additional ways to directly use the catch info from VTRs/logbooks.
