Spiral wrap
Thinking about trying a spiral wrap rod for sea bass and bottom. What are the advantages and disadvantages to a spiral wrap. Also where can I go and buy one.

You might want to reach out to 2NA on this site. He builds some of the best Spiral rods you can get. He can also tell you the advantages of using them. Jon has built 2 for me and they are my go to rods. He is the best and very knowledgeable on the subject.

I feel the biggest advantage is that all rod twist is eliminated---rod acts like a spinning rod...This is a huge advantage--not having to use any energy to combat the rods tendency to turn while under load--the bigger the load, the more it wants to turn. For tuna, my rods with 40, 50 & 60-80# test line are acid wrapped & I wouldn't give them up!!!
I concur with capt74, PM 2na, you won't go wrong.. Also contact Tom or Tony @ Jersey Tackle(Mantoloking) they built two & 2na built one. I don't know if you can get an acid wrap off the rack--don't think I'd trust the build to be right. As told to me, guides need to be adjusted and tested for proper placement--1/4-1/2" can screw it up...no two same model blanks are exactly the same...doesn't make that much difference on conventionally wrapped rods--they all want to twist...I'm seeing more spirals on the offshore trips each year...

Please be aware that a Left-handed (non-level-wind) conventional reel must have the Spiral transition to the right - unless you have really long fingers

Like others have mentioned, spiral wrap or acid wrap simply takes the twisting and turning of the rod in your hands especially on larger fish and heavier sinkers totally out of the question. It allows the angler to apply all the power and torque into fighting the fish, not fighting the rod!
All factory JW rods are spiral wrapped for this reason! For seabass and blackfish I highly suggest you check out the JW Black Demon MH. Currently still on sale! You won't regret it!
