GAMBLER --Canyon Report
Gambler returned from a 24 hour tuna trip yesterday. We had moved our Saturday trip up by 7 hours (to leave at noon) in order to beat the wind forecast.
On our way to the canyon, we saw whales and slicks and birds on the flats again. Setting up on our drift around 3PM, we caught a 30lb yellow on a jig within 10 mins. The fishing was pretty good until sunset. About 2/3rds were taken on jigs. No bluefin this time. Yellowfin mostly between 25 and 50lbs with a few bigger. The speedsters were feeding on big sandeels. Like last time, the bite turned off by dusk. So Gambler headed to the canyon wall for the night/morning bite. I had gotten a report from another boat that had good action there the night before. I found a beautiful break of 75f and anchored in 680ft at the edge. It was a very nice night --but the fish didn't come into the slick. Our guys caught a handful a mahi during in the dark. Other boats within a 5 mile stretch from us had caught 0 to 6 fish during the same time period. Near day break, we headed back in and hooked into a few more yellowfin along with a 100+ lb bigeye. Good trip overall with some really fun guys Make sure to bring a jigging rod --and a jig that looks like a sandeel 5 to 10 ounces. Most tuna were jigged at 100ft the last 2 trips but a few were near bottom.
