I took the canoe out on the local lake with my girlfriend. She's a novice and though she has had a few fish on, she invariably loses them. She still hasn't grasped the concept of keeping her rod tip high with a fish on.
I had been giving her easy lures to work. Stuff that wouldn't catch a lot of weeds and don't take much in the way of skill. Mostly topwater and spinnerbaits.
That morning I had boated 4 bass on my Senko and she still had a zero. Finally I put a Swim Senko on for her and gave her a quick primer about setting the hook if she sees the line twitch, feels weight on it or sees the line move through the water.
On her third cast with the Swim Senko she screamed that she had something but said she lost it. Then we saw a nice bass jump. I told her she still had something on and she said no way. I told her to reel in the slack and suddenly she was in for a battle. A few minutes later she boated her first bass, actually her first fish ever. Not a bad one for a beginner.
