I actually found areas were I could cast for them. It was a blast.

I spent a few hours doing some internet research and it would appear that this river get POUNDED during the run. I'm not looking for that combat fishing experience. Any thoughts? I do have a boat.

If your boat is equipped with down riggers and you have all the proper trolling equipment you can't go wrong launching your boat out of Oswego. Larry's Oswego Salmon Shop is 2 minutes from the boat ramp. Great area to fish for Kings, Browns and Lakers! It's August so thee fish should be staged in 100-140 feet of water before making there annual push up the river. Nows the time to give it a go. Or, you can wait til they move into he estuary and launch your boat at Selkirk shores on the Salmon River. Not as much gear is needed once they enter the mouths of the rivers and creeks! I guess you can call it glorified Trout fishing. Obviously these fish are much stronger than almost everything that swims on the east coast. Good luck on your journey!

Once the salmon enter the river you are right they get pounded. If you arnt looking for combat fishing the salmon river isn't for you. Some years they get a good push of fish mid august -early September where the river isn't crowded but it's a guessing game when those rins will occur, hit it right you can catch fish tI'll your arms give out, go up a day late and you will have to work your butt off for one or two fish. Late September till middle of October the fish are pretty consistent but so are the crowds.

Steelhead season i find much more enjoyable but can be crowded as well.

Those are beautiful steelhead. very nice. The salmon fishing is fun, but you have to go up there with the right attitude...almost all of the fish that are caught are snagged and the crowds are horrific. if you are prone to high blood pressure stay home....combat fishing at it's finest. steelhead as said earlier is different crowd and they are biters.

jerry postorino (fish monger) who is a sponsor here caught some of the craziest rainbow/steelhead up there I have ever seen. the tails looked like koi...i think he mounted one of them....he called it a fan tail rainbow. see if I can dredge up a picture somewhere.
