Thumbs up Round Valley night fishin' 7/11/15:

2nd attempt this year to catch Rainbow trout at RV this year, total so far, 0
Looking over my logbooks from as far back as 1995 nothing has changed over the years. Many log entries for this type of fishing in July and August. Most nights 3, 5, 7, 13, 4, 3, and so on Rainbow trout caught in one night, what is going on. Same baits, same location, same depth, no fish other than rock bass and bluegills. I know the State put half a million Rainbows in there this spring, and I see everyone catching Rainbows at RV except me.
Anyway, took the wife up there and we had a great night under a star lit sky and both reminisced about all the great times we had up there.
Don't want to throw in the towel on this fishing since it has held up steady since at least 1995, and it's only 20 minutes from my house, any advice.

Usually do it a few times over the summer, last year went 0-3. Year before did pretty good. This year I guess we will see. One bit of advice from my experience is absolutely do not waste your time on a Full moon. It's the Devil unless you want a million rock bass and giant bluegills. AND I almost forgot, leave that CHEESE CRAP at home for a late night snack when you get home!!!!! Should be tryin it out in the next few weeks let you know how I make out!!!!!

Andy the place is huge and the fish move around alot. I would be looking around on sonar for signs of life in an area before I would anchor up and just wait and bait. RV has been changing alot past few years and not for the better IMO, but its still worth fishing. I think shrimp and fatheads/small shiners are the best bait and powerbait also works well. As Dale said the full moon is usually terrible fishing for trout, and is hit or miss with other species depending on the breed. You could always grab some herring and anchor up on a point on LH and give your gear a workout with the wipers

Hey Andy. Have you talked to the guys at Behre Bait & Tackle? One time I stopped in there to buy baitfish, and Zach there told me he had success at night.

Have never fished RVR, but I plan on trying my luck from the shore when things cool down this fall. Have had a lot of luck with butterworms in the streams, so I plan on fishing butterworms from the bottom there. Good luck and let me know how things work out.

Andy, how deep were you fishing? It seems they have dropped deeper in the past week. I would look for marks and target 40 feet.

I've only been out one night this year in May. One rainbow @16". It's nowhere near as good as it was a few years ago. I think all the boats and night fisherman really did some damage to the fishery.

The cold thermocline starts at ~25ft so you need to be down at least that far.

Anyway, the nights when the lake flys are hatching are coming and those will be the best nights. And I'm marking a lot if fish trolling the lake duting the day. If you're not marking any fish let me know and I'll at least be able to tell you where they're holding.

Went last night (7/17). Did much better. Perfect evening to be on the lake. Wasn't non-stop action but I'd get a rainbow every 15 minutes. All between 15"-19".
