Default FISH TANK - Late Thurs PM and Mother's Day Report

5/7/15
We had an open boat striper trip last Thurs afternoon and I had high hopes considering the crew of good fishermen on board. It started off slow with only a couple of blues but then the tide started to move and we had a nice flurry of bass for about an hour. Unfortunately, all but one of them spit the hook after a 5-10 minute battle. After that, we were singing the blues for the rest of the night. I think we had around 2 dozen blues and a lone keeper bass around 12lbs.

I was at the helm again yesterday for the Gene Klein charter. He, his son Gene, daughter Barbara, and grandkids Reuben, Tommy and Eddie were all anxious to bring home some striper fillets for dinner. We had our first fish in the box within 2 minutes of lines in...a blue. 10 minutes later, another blue. 5 minutes after that...well, you get the point. I ran all over the bay and you guessed it, blues, blues, and more blues. The kids had a great time catching these demons, but I wasn't going to be happy until we had something with stripes in the box.

Around 2pm, I decided to make a last ditch effort and go back to some numbers we fished a few weeks ago. 10 minutes after the spoons were in, the rod went down and this fish was acting a little differently. 10 minutes later, it surfaced about 20ft off our stern and that beautiful dorsal fin confirmed my suspicion...this is the one we have been waiting for. A fat 22lb bass hit the deck and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I kept the guys out for an extra hour working that area and wound up with more blues and another bass around 18lbs.

We got back to the dock a lot later than expected, but it was worth it. Everyone went home with more than enough meat for Mother's Day dinner and they can't wait for their next trip in a few weeks.

We are charted this coming weekend, but would like to put together an open boat trip either this Thurs or Fri. Please call or email me if you would like to join us.

Tight lines!
