Weekend report
So a bunch of us decided to try for landlocked salmon on Saturday, did some DD and question asking and got to the lake by 7AM. Set a number of tip ups in 35 to 60 feet of water at various depths and then had 6 guys jigging hard. There have been a number of fish caught over the last few weeks and I had good reports so my sights were set high. After two hours of nothing a flag pops in sixty feet of water, I had the bait suspended about 8 feet down. I run over and the spool is screaming, set the hook and I am into a good fish. The fish takes line a few times and I am using 6 pound leader so I have to be gentle. After a minute or so I bring the fish to the hole and get a sinking feeling as I see the nose of a 20+ inch pickerel. I have never been so disappointed to see a big pickerel in my life. I'm cursing and thinking to myself what in the world is this pickerel doing suspended 8 feet under in 60 feet of wide open water. Had three good runoffs after that with all three fish doing the exact same thing, hitting running 10 feet of line and dropping the bait. We fished hard but no landlocks for us although we did see a couple caught. So after fishing last Tuesday afternoon/evening at RV in a raging snowstorm and taking the skunk and fishing Saturday all day for a measly pickerel I had to go back to basics yesterday. Me and a buddy hit a local hole and landed about a dozen fish or more on tips and jigged these for the dinner table:
