Re: Last straw! Bastards!
Damned if they do. Damned if they don't. If they leave it alone, there's always a chance of a breach in those narrow areas between the ocean and the river or bay. A breach at Sandy Hook or Sea Bright would change the environment considerably. Look what it did in Mantoloking. The amount of current which comes down the beach from the Hudson/Raritan and the other waterways is overlooked. There is quite a flow down the beach which affects the beaches on down to Shark River. The northern current moves more sand up to the channels and then out east. It was much more difficult to run a boat near Sandy Hook years ago because of the shoals. Sand moves, let's face it. Man almost has to intervene or face tremendous environmental, social and economical issues. Fishing is not a big part of the plan. We think it should be but, even the groins were man-made. Imagine what our beaches would have been without them. There are no groins in IBSP and yet quality catches are always made there. Leif, I feel your pain, and in 50 years, someone will be having this discussion again when the Corps is trying to save the sand in front of Pier Village. Interestingly, there was once an effort to run a steamship business from that area on the ocean, so there was always a problem with the beaches there. Read some of the material about Deal, Elberon, Long Branch from back in the day. Finally, what would the old Long Branch pier look like after a replenishment project.
