Mid October through January 1, besides the herring spawn, is my favorite time to fish. The fish most definitely ARE feeding heavy for winter. We've had multiple days throughout fall when we've put over 40 Hybrids in the boat, slammed the biggest, fattest Walleyes of the year, big LMB's, as well as "unplanned" battles with Muskies. The biggest difference between "Jersey fishing" and "everywhere else" is the seasonal patterns of forage base. Ours(Alewife) go deep in the cooler temps, where as in other parts of the country they (shiners, cisco, etc.) move shallow. If you are a bank-pounding Bass fisherman, you surely won't have much success. Think deep and your catches will increase ;).

Does anybody know if you can still launch a boat? It was getting a bit difficult for for larger boats last time I was there in May. I was thinking of an Oct camping and fishing trip, but I'm not going to book in advance if there is a chance I can't launch the boat.

I live just over the mountain and have enjoyed scuba, boating and walking my dog several time a week at RV and never seen the water this low. Sunday morning it looked like the water level had just dropped another foot or so based on the damp line on the shore. I've seem from a lot of scuba diving there that the majority of the larger fish tend to run along the ridge of the first drop in about 20-30 ft of water because what little flats there are always had some plants and baitfish just above/adjacent to the drop in the 0-15 ft depth range. Now I see areas that i had only seen diving exposed and the aquatic plants are cooked. These same flats are where all the clambeds are. I can't imagine this bodes well for the larger fish as the shoreline and shallows disappears and it becomes more like a bathtub than it always was. For those of you who know the scuba training platform (remember Gene O.) now you can see if from shore when the sun is right. Cant be more than 6 feet of water over it and a few years ago it was 22 ft depth on the deck of the platform. Anybody know whats going on ?
