Re: Open Boat for Canyon
I too fished w Capt Bernie many trips. I loved fishing w him. As others stated, fuel costs have risen. The average overnight trip w tip is $750 to $800. I also recommend Jenny Lee.
An alternative would be a trip to cape cod. You can get on opening boats for $600 for a 8 hr day trip. |
Re: Open Boat for Canyon
Fuel prices are down from last year. $800.00 is just crazy per person for an overnight. Crazy, Crazy, Criminal Crazy.

Re: Open Boat for Canyon
$1000 -$1500 in fuel
500 in bait 200 in ice 5-8 K per year for a slip 10's of thousands of dollars in equipment and gear and tackle and maintaining it all so it is ready for a 280 lb bigeye or a 400 lb sword Insurance Concurrent boat maintenance and up to date safety equipment so your safe 100 miles offshore Captains and mates pay for a 24 hour job Plus it supports local business in an economically stressed industry. Its not crazy at all for a good quality charter operation to get 4K-5K for an overnighter. There is a lot more to it then just jumping on a boat but I'm sure you know that. I will say if you want bang for your buck jump on a Long Range trip out of San Diego. 5-8 day trips for 2200-2800 bucks. Some of the best fishing I've ever seen. |
Re: Open Boat for Canyon
I've done a few trips out of San Diego. Great trips. I'm just saying those kind of prices are not for me. I'll take my boat out for $500.00. You just have to pick the day in a 25. I wish the charter industry the best. They just have to do it without me. For now I will chase the Bluefin until there gone.

Re: Open Boat for Canyon
There is a price for a captain who is on the grounds multiple days per week, has a good network and are proven to put clients on fish. Its not just gas/insurance etc. Its a guide service.
