Trout Cruzing the shore RVR
Did some fishing down by RVR in the Rangers Cove area. I saw many trout swimming close to the shore but couldn't get them to bite. Any ideas or suggestions on how to catch this trout?

Maybe think outside the box. These trout have seen shiners, crawlers, and power bait up the wazoo. Show them something they haven't seen before, like a soft plastic jerkbait, or a curly tail grub. It has worked for me in the past, maybe it will work for you. Be persistent. Show them everything in your tackle box until you find what they want.

Re: Trout Cruzing the shore RVR
Hey Detour. One suggestion which may not apply if you're not making the same mistake I was is the line you're using. I tried fishing for these trout without success for some time until someone pointed out that they're super line-shy and would not touch my 8-pound test. I scaled-down to 4 and used P-Line flouroclear for good measure and then I started having some success. You probably know this, but if you don't, there you go.

I also learned this about braid on RVR. Last year in December in 70' of water, my buddy was getting hits on his Binski. Meanwhile, I was getting nothing but he was on mono, and I was on braid. Made the switch and started bringing them in. You wouldn't think it would make a big difference that deep, but it did and I haven't used braid on RVR since. Fly-fish with an orange egg pattern and make a long cast 10' in front of their path. And don't let them spot your casting motion or they're gone.

Re: Trout Cruzing the shore RVR
Yesterday, as there was no wind (do best there when it's blowing out of the NW), didn’t wade fish the eastern shore. On a tip from a boat angler, decided to try the southern shore off of “The Pines”.
Caught a couple of dink smallies on a Yo Zuri. I could see some trout in the shallows, and every so often one would dimple / fin @ the surface. One trout jumped clear of the water. Cast after cast,…..nothing. In waist deep water, I spied an unopened bottle of beer. Kicked it to the shoreline,………….a Beck’s!,…..my favorite!! Enjoyed a cold one, sitting on a shoreline rock watching a few trout break the “calm as mill pond” surface,……………& then, refreshed,…….on the first cast, a plump, 16.5” brown! |
