Re: Volvo Diesel
I had heard that parts in this area (SH) had been always been an issue. Not just recently.
Reputation WAS good engines. But hard to get parts locally.

Re: Volvo Diesel
I heard the same thing.
Not sure what horsepower your are looking for but I've heard good things about the Yanmars in the smaller horsepower engines.

Re: Volvo Diesel
When I was in the market for a boat I asked the same question of a few people in the know, and they ALL told me to stay away. Parts are very hard to come by and are very expensive. In the SH area it is also very hard to find someone to work on them.
When I was looking there were a ton of boats in the tri state area with the Volvo's.... the only place that I could find the boat that I wanted with the Cummins were in Fla. I ended up making 5 trips to Fla looking at boats due to the fact that everyone told me to stay away from the Volvo's and these are guys that work on boats every day. |

Re: Volvo Diesel
Not sure what model engine you are considering. Volvo D4 and D6 series engines have a reputation for being very reliable. These are common rail , electronically controlled engines, less smoke and less noise than mechanical diesels-like Yanmar and Cummins. Also they are fly by wire, so 2 control levers instead of 4, smaller harnesses too.
Parts are available online and at local marine stores in our area.(Lockwoods in Morgan) It is true that the parts are more expensive than Yanmar, Cummins etc. Loads of information on the topic at boatdiesel.com, which is where I did most of my research before deciding on a boat with D4 260s. |

Re: Volvo Diesel
When it's parts you be needing, it's a long way to Sweden ! My first boat had volvos, when the repairs started looming, I sold the boat. My second boat had volvos, I ran them one season, when the repairs started looming I repowered with cummins. That was six years ago, not a bit of trouble since then. All new engines are good, its when they age and you need parts that the make becomes important. Volvo has always had a supply issue. I think the new volvos with the IPS are really neat, but I'm waiting to see what happens when they are 5 years old and out of warranty.
