Exclamation American Shad:

American Shad Possession Limits
The recreational American shad possession limit has been reduced from three fish down to two.

The new management measure has been implemented to address unsustainable adult female American shad mortality within the Delaware Basin and to comply with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission approved Delaware River Basin Fish and Wildlife Management.

Good idea. Few anglers keep A. Shad. The majority of freshwater anglers, for any species, practice catch & release.

There are more shad killed every year by the use of flutter spoons than there are from the daily position limit. Shad tend to take flutter spoons a lot deeper than darts and many get gill or gut hooked. You want to protect the migration, outlaw flutter spoons. Reducing the possession limit from 3 to 2 won't prevent people from still fishing after attaining their limit so I don't really see how the new regs will materially address the problem.

If management is serious about saving the shad fishery, address the issue of bycatch mortality in the Atlantic based on the shads salt water migration and the millions that are killed in the process of commercial netting of mackerel and herring. Once again, what used to be a watershed pollution problem, is now a commercial problem to a recreational fishery. Sounds familiar.

We all know how this will end up, next year will be 1 shad and in 2 years from now it will be C&R only.

I'd always heard that shad suck as table fare. If so then why would anyone want to keep them (other than the aforementioned tournament).
