Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
My daughter and I grab our kayaks and headed out for a few hours on the Wallkill River at the National Wildlife Refuge. I didn't bring any fishing gear so no fishing was done but we did see a few nice size fish in the river. A couple of bass, pickerel, lots of bait fish and what I believe was a large carp jump completely out of the water. Has anyone ever fished the river? Just wondering if it is worth another trip or not.
It was a great day on the river if anyone is looking to just canoe or kayak. We saw a pair of bald eagles that seemed to follow us down the river. They flew ahead of us landed in a tree, waited for us to get to them then repeated for about 30 minutes. |

Nice pictures. The Great Blue Herons do that all of the time. They will fly off in the direction you are going and as you approach them again, do it all over again and again.lol

Re: Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
Great pics! I grew up in New Paltz.. so been fishing the Wallkill my whole life..mostly in Ulster and Orange counties.. it always has been a great little smallmouth stream..also full of big carp and various panfish.. in recent years it has really come on strong with some nice Walleyes and channel cats.. by all means bring your tackle next time!

Re: Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
I almost went here once but decided against it because I wasn't finding much good information, but after reading this I'm going to have to give it a visit with the Kayak.

Keep me posted on how you do. Maybe we can float it one day.
