South Branch 7/24/21:
So today was a recon mission to find the pile of 57 tires that were pulled and put on the bank at Studdiford only to have the river rise and wash them all back into the river..
A crew of 7, 6 of us in the water including thmyorke1 and 1 on land doing shuttle. We were fortunate to find about 10 or so in a back eddy near the bridge but after that no signs of "newly deposited" tires. What we did end up finding was about 50 tires we pulled from the mud. So this got us thinking that maybe the pile ended up by Perth Amboy during the flood ??? On a hunch we went over to the island at Robert St. in Raritan Borough and started to find some of the original pile. So we banked 28 tires there, 2 at Nevius. So doing the math 28+2+10, we cant find the other 17, not bad though considering. Glad to sit back now thinking for the most part the North and South branches are tire free, (about 99%) after what, 7 years of this. Please, if you see something say something, photos, photos and more photos if you do find something including the location is a huge help. CJST will be on the Rahway river in August and back on the main stem near Piscataway in September.. Last edited by AndyS; 07-25-2021 at 11:07 PM.. |

Re: South Branch 7/24/21:
A big thank you to all those involved in the clean up! There's so many posts from Andy and others about this stuff that I think we become sanitized about the effort and result a few put in to keep our outdoors and waterways clean. A tremendous amount of gratitude to those involved, your commitment and efforts make a huge difference.
Question, where are all these tires coming from and is there any hope of preventing this down the road or is it always going to be clean ups after the fact. Are the tires coming from flood situations or intentionally dumped. Are there areas known to be more problematic and can surveillance help enforcement efforts. Would love to read a post one day that so and so was caught dumping tires and fined $25k, given 6 months jail time and a year community service and had his car confiscated. Just wondering if law enforcement is involved or anything happening on the enforcement front. It's great to see how good people keep our outdoors pristine, it sucks at the same time seeing how people abuse it the way they do. A big thank you again to the former! Re: South Branch 7/24/21:
Many of these tires are 40 to 50 years old.
I did see tons of baitfish at Robert St. |
