Default Squid Attractant?

I'm hoping someone knows about this...last year during party boat tuna season, some of the fishermen were using a paste type attractant on their squid jigs. The stuff was like cocaine for squid. They couldn't stay away from their jigs. Does anyone know what this stuff is called? Any idea where to get it?

Smelly jelly works pretty good for squid.

Thumbs up Re: Squid Attractant?

Smelly Jelly is the way to go. Try the Blue (Herring) flavor.

If it doesn't work on the squid you can always put a few squirts in your buddies coffee cup and see what happens.

There is also another product called Bio Edge. Its made in both a gel and liquid. Its made in 10 scents from squid, to ballyhoo and IMHO its more advanced than the Smelly Jelly and older products. Bio Edge has amino acids and other attractants not found in the older products.

I have fished real ballyhoo and fake ballys with Bio Edge Gel in them and on many trips the fake ballys out fished the real ballys. I removed the Bio Edge and the real ballys went hot. I am convinced and sold on it.

In saying this... I also agree that Smelly Jelly will also work too, but Bio Edge is more advanced.

Is there a scent type that you have found effective for the canyon squid this year?

I have found the shrimp flavor Smelly Jelly to be very effective on squid.

Used both Herring and Shrimp Smelly Jelly with great success. Thanks Tonk! I apply it to the jig with a plastic spoon handle. You don't want to get it on you or your clothes as it stays with you for a long time. Also cloth covered jigs(Martinelli) hold the jelly a little better and feels more natural to the Squid. It makes the difference when the Squid are small/tenitive. The Illex(Shortfin) are large and easy to catch when they are around. But the smaller Loligo Squid can be a pain in the a$$. Smaller jigs/4lb. test/smelly jelly will catch them most of the time if they are there.
