There's two things at play which favor onerous rule relaxation or outright change.

1. Bureaucrats take their cues from the top as pleasing the bosses is their #1 priority in keeping their jobs or moving up. The last administration was lousy with radical lefties that had an agenda which went much further than just being stewards of the environment.

2. Consumer confidence, so to speak. Just like the economy took off on the belief that the current administration was business friendly, all other depressed concerns will follow suit being energized with the possibility of change after being induced toward apathy for so long.

Buy them out? What about people that want to eat fish? What about catholic people? What are they going to eat on Friday? Close every seafood restaurant too? I can't believe the selfishness.

How right you are. I do enjoy going out to eat and I like seafood. And how about when you go to buy bait? How did the bait get to the bait shop? Commercial fishing has a place in our lives. But wasteful practices and destructive gear do not. And we may just have too many people in the commercial fishing business. Put tighter limits on the amount of commercial licences issued and open seasons. The ones remaining would still make a living, maybe a better living. Supply and demand would take care of that. Paying more for seafood is better than not having seafood due to overfishing and destroying the fishery...Charlie

Trawling is tearing up habitat and annihilating the juvenile populations of non targeted species. If people want supermarket fish, let them eat farmed fish. There is far more farmed salmon eaten than wild salmon. Same holds true for shrimp, oysters, and trout.

If we stop trawling, commercial fishermen will be able to make a fine living pin fishing or limited long lines.

You twisted what i meant..Selfishness?Gill netters should be bought out period. The bunker boats should only aloud to sell bunker for bait not omega. The commercial fleet has to be reduced.Buy them out like Florida did because "They have to eat too". At what cost -extinction!

1. Environmental protection matters.... regardless of if fishing is better in polluted waters... Craziest sh** I've heard in a while. To answer the asinine question "Do you think presidents want oil polluted waters?", No, I don't think they want that. Do they want the money and support that comes from oil companies and other industry lobbyists? Yes. So.... their greed usually wins out. Just a fact of life. It happens regardless of political affiliation, so let's not make it sound like Trump is some angel. Can we please stop politicizing fishing on this board?

2. Please stop comparing the commercial fishery to the rec sector. Commercials waste so much more than any rec industry could. It's just a fact. Bycatch is by far and away the greatest killer of juvenile and non-targeted species. Netting has a negative impact on the environment. Fact. Is it feasible to shut down the commercial fishery? No. Is it reasonable to want increased monitoring and better regulations regarding bycatch? Absolutely.
