Re: Gambler nj fishing tuna trip
Is a penn rampage rod rated for 30-80lb with two roller guides and a TLD-25 good enough for a trip like this? If so how should the reel be spooled for this?

Re: Gambler nj fishing tuna trip
Foot,
That rod will get the job done. The reel would be fine also with 200yd of 65 lb braid with 200yd of 60lb mono on top. That said...braid is NOT usually encouraged for use in party boat chunking but, would probably be accepted for use as backing. Also, reports...currently, are of 100-200lb big eye and 80lb YFT which will make short work of 60lb line. That outfit would work well for longfin and up to 60lb YFT. Moral of the story...I'd look for alittle bigger reel. Shorts |

Re: Gambler nj fishing tuna trip
The fish are mean! I would say. 350/400 yards of 80 is a guide for reel size. I like a 30tw or 50sw. I started with a 6/0 then 9/0. Now 50sw and 50tw. Etc. caught an 185 bigeye on a shimano mid size reel. Go and learn and enjoy!
I am not on the 36 I am on th 48hr trip, if you want I have a 6/0 and 9/0 you more then welcome to use. I do have an extra 50 international but will not commit to lending till I meet you .Let me know. Last edited by BCinerie; 09-15-2015 at 01:37 PM.. Reason: Edit |

Re: Gambler nj fishing tuna trip
This date will have some good prizes to raffle off sponsored by Nick Cicero and Bob from Bimini Bay, Reel Seat Tackle and others, including a free 24hour canyon trip on the Gambler as a door prize. Proceeds from the raffle will go directly to SSFFF who is hiring scientists that will help keep us fishing for fluke. There is still plenty of room on this trip, so sign up soon.
Proceeds From the NJfishing trip raffle will go directly to SSFFF. This organization has done tremendous work with scientists to keep us fishing for fluke for generations to come. But we still need your support --there is still work to do. The SSFFF is exceptional in that no member has ever taken any money for personal use --ALL proceeds have gone directly to good science so that we may keep fishing for fluke for generations to come. Please continue to support. Thanks. Here is the reel worth $459 retail --capable of 40lbs drag

Re: Gambler nj fishing tuna trip
Still have open sites for the trip---what's wrong with you guys???
Footer, you should be good to go with that rig...bring some lighter leader material/made up leaders for the day bite. With that said I fish 80# @ night, 50# @ sunup(magic hour) & 30#line/40# leaders @ full day with rare exception...just sayin".....
