Re: Fog
If u have little or no experance running the fog , especially w/o radar I would not go unless ur with an experanced guy .
Years ago we did it frequently worked off charts , sounder , but we generally went to a given location so we could plot our courses from this region. Nothing more scary than to have a tanker appear so close to u w/o hearing them. This we ecountered frequently in the SH region when rip fishing was good. Knowing ur position is critical & if u don't understand the basics don't go. We ran off yesterday in pea soup to Cod grounds , however proper electronics & experienced Captain in these conditions R A must ! Don't forget hitting an floating object chances go up dramatically even with radar they do not show up , if limited experance I would not go until I gained some confidence & much needed experance. Even with radar u must understand what ur looking at & need to interpret even with radar it's not always the panacea u envision . When I first used the radar I use to plot to a known buoy & verify my position then proceed to next buoy en route again to verify my position & gain confidence that my plotting using the radar was spot on, very little room for error if u find ur self in close quarters or in shipping lanes . |

Re: Fog
Very easy to get disoriented in dense fog. Knowing where you are, what general compass heading to run to your destination, a chart plotter and radar are practically musts.

Re: Fog
Had a good day today caught a lot of big blues on the troll and anchored up probably had 30'or so a lot of fun on light tackle.
First time that I've had to use my radar and it worked great and was happy to have it today. Fog lifted for most of day where it was safe to navigate but rolled back in around 5:00 when we headed in. It was nice to see all boats running slow today Be safe out there guys👍🏻👍🏻 |

Re: Fog
Was not too bad. Worst was about 1/4 mile visability. Can you say Bluefish? All you wanted in the bay.. Temps were down to 58 near the reach channel.
