Cool Re: damn cormorants

There should be open season on them all year long. They are not only at the stocked steams and ponds but also in the ocean. Something should be done.

Love the video! But probley can't do that here in Jersey. All the money we spend to live and fish here and WE are restricted on what we can keep!
About twelve or so years ago I was looking for peanut bunker in Raritan Bay. In Leonardo Harbor I found a 30 to 40 of those BLACK DEATH birds diving on something. I assumed it was pb so I threw my cast net ( unfortunately not getting any birds ) and to my surprise loaded with spike weakfish!!And now we can only keep ONE! Something has to be done indeed. Find the nest and vegetable oil the eggs.

I have had em sitting 20-30 feet away from the boat blackfishing inshore and watched em eat small blacks every time they dive for one.....then leave when full!

Angry Re: damn cormorants

Remember they are protected under a federal statute regarding migratory birds much like the damn Canada geese. If you go after them be very circumspect.

You should see how smart these birds are down in FL. As sooon as they see a boat stop and the fishing poles come out, they come out of nowhere... At first they land in your general area and keep their distance...Once they see you reeling in a fish they come closer and as soon as they see you realease it, they dive for it.

.

I paddled beneath a cormorant in a tree in Merrill Creek Reservoir and the thing nearly shit on me.
I wouldn't mind seeing a depredation program targeting cormorants. They are a real nuisance.

Someone's pics - not mine.

They're smart, and will find enough.

Once we stop stocking half a million bird-snacks in the waters, then they'll starve but only once they drastically hit the other native species.

Lightbulb Re: damn cormorants

They sit at the entrance to fish ladder on the Raritan river where the fish get bottled up.

I've yet to see one in the D&R Canal eating stockies and it's odd because they are in the Delaware when the herring start running. We can't catch those herring anymore for bait, but the birds can feast away.
