Very sad. All the more reason to support your local bait and tackle shops!

Sad, they were in institution. I think nearly angler or hunter who lived in the area visited Melzers at least once.

It always sucks to see another local sportsman's shop go down. The list is getting too long.....

.

I always wanted to open a store called "Bubba's Beer Bait and Ammo".
Something like Hi-Way Sport Shop on Route 31, except with a liquor store attached.

True, but unfortunately some don't have the greatest selection. You can call around or drive around to 3 or 4 local shops to find what you want, or just order online. A lot easier.

I prefer to support local shops where possible, but it's not always easy. Last week I needed a new anchor for my boat, so went to Franks Tackle and Field in Wanaque. They used to have a load of boating equipment. Now the only anchor they had in stock was a small one suitable for a kayak. So I ordered from Amazon. Unfortunately the new owner there seems to have drastically cut his inventory of boating gear.

Well this sucks, good place. But unfortunately it's the way things are going. In less time that it takes to drive to a store I can research an item and find the cheapest of the bunch and order it, sometimes with free shipping. I watched the same thing happen to a store in Paramus on route 17. Two stores in the same parking lot. In one a rapala lure cost $9, walk across the lot and the same lure costs $6-7. Now unless their volume purchasing power simply doesn't allow them to offer that lure at the same price, they really aren't doing themselves any favors by being more expensive. With that being said if it were a choice of items at the same price I would prefer the local shop that has friendly knowledgable people which Meltzers had.

I have a friend who made a point. When he was young after school he use to run to the bait shop and go fishing almost everyday. The fact is: where did that mentality go? I haven't seen a kid by himself in a bait or tackle store in years. We lost our children to video games, I-pads and the like. If they're not fishing now, what is going to happen with their kids? I'm a very strong believer in introducing children to the sport. Whether it's my child, my grand children, or someone else child. So many times I asked a child does he/she fish and he/she responds, "my dad doesn't so I don't go or know how. But I would like to try it.
TAKE A KID FISHING. ANY KID.
My best to the crew at Melzers. Especially to Bill Melzer who is a gentleman to all.

Amen to that. When I take my daughter to the local park ponds the fishing, the other little kids walking by inevitably ask their parents to take them fishing someday. Sometimes the parents ask me for advice, but not enough, too shy maybe. Sometimes if I see a dad struggling with bread balls, birds nests and sad kids not catching fish, my daughter and I will offer some worms and tips. Kids lose it when they catch a fish!
